Micro-CT Imaging and Quantitative Analysis for Endodontic and Root Canal Research
Endodontic research focuses on understanding the complex anatomy of the root canal system and evaluating the effectiveness of endodontic treatments, instrumentation techniques, irrigation protocols, obturation materials, and regenerative approaches. Because the internal structure of root canals is highly variable and three-dimensional, high-resolution imaging plays a critical role in accurate morphological assessment.
At KARA, we provide Micro-CT imaging and quantitative image analysis for endodontic and root canal research. Our imaging workflows enable researchers to visualize the three-dimensional anatomy of root canals, evaluate structural changes following instrumentation, and quantify treatment outcomes using non-destructive, high-resolution imaging.
Depending on the objectives of the study, Micro-CT datasets can be analyzed to evaluate canal morphology, canal volume, surface area, dentin thickness, canal transportation, centering ability, filling quality, void distribution, and other quantitative parameters. These measurements provide objective data for comparing instrumentation systems, irrigation techniques, obturation methods, and endodontic materials.

What Can Be Evaluated?

Root Canal Morphology
Canal volume can be measured before and after instrumentation or treatment to evaluate the amount of dentin removed and the effectiveness of canal preparation.

Surface Area
Quantitative analysis of canal surface area provides additional information about canal morphology and the extent of surface preparation during instrumentation.

Remaining dentin thickness
Remaining dentin thickness can be evaluated to determine the structural integrity of the tooth after canal preparation and to identify regions that may be at greater risk of perforation or fracture.

Canal Transportation
Micro-CT enables quantitative assessment of canal transportation following instrumentation by comparing the original and prepared canal geometries.

Centering Ability
The centering ability of endodontic instruments can be evaluated by assessing how well the prepared canal remains centered within the original canal anatomy.

Root Canal Filling Quality
Three-dimensional analysis can be used to evaluate the quality of root canal obturation, including filling adaptation, filling volume, and the distribution of filling materials.

Void Analysis
Pre- and post-instrumentation imaging enables researchers to evaluate structural changes induced by different endodontic instruments, including dentin removal, canal enlargement, and shaping efficiency.

Instrumentation Effects
Micro-CT allows non-destructive evaluation of internal voids within root canal filling materials. Void volume and distribution can be quantified and compared between different obturation techniques.

Three-Dimensional Canal Reconstruction
Three-dimensional reconstruction provides comprehensive visualization of the entire root canal system, facilitating anatomical studies, treatment evaluation, and educational presentations.
